Twenty-Five Positions Instead of Fifteen

A five-by-five grid holds two-thirds more symbols than the conventional five-by-three, and everything that follows from the extra rows — legibility, hit frequency, the number of events per spin — changes with them. The grid dimension is the first thing to read and the least often noticed.

What the extra rows do

They multiply the number of possible paylines available to the designer, and they put more symbols in front of the player on every spin. A grid with twenty-five positions produces more visible near-misses, more partial combinations and more visual activity per round than one with fifteen.

None of this changes the return percentage, which is set independently in the paytable and reel weightings. It changes how the same return is experienced, which is a different and more immediate matter.

The legibility cost

Twenty-five symbols in the same screen area means each symbol is smaller. On a desktop this is unremarkable; on a phone it is the difference between a grid that can be read at a glance and one that requires attention the pace does not allow.

Checking the dimensions

They are stated plainly and visible immediately. Opening the Hot Fiesta demo shows the grid and the payline count in the same view, and the two together determine how a winning combination will look when one forms.

Count the paylines while you are there. A larger grid supports more of them, and more paylines means the stake is spread across more paths — which affects how paytable values should be read against it.

The stake basis question

On a line-based game, paytable values may be quoted per line or per total stake, and the convention is stated in small text below the table. Mixing the two between games produces a comparison wrong by the payline count, which is the most common error in reading paytables.

Why the return figure is unaffected

Because it is engineered into the model rather than emerging from the grid. A larger grid with a correspondingly adjusted paytable produces the same total return as a smaller one; the dimension is a design choice about texture, not about generosity.

What the dimension predicts

More frequent small results and a busier screen, without any implication about the size of large ones. Whether that suits you is a question about preference rather than value, and it is answerable in about five minutes of watching the grid rather than by reading anything.
